Microsoft AppFest on Feb 26

Microsoft will tap the student community to populate its app (IT applications) bank. It has invited thousands of students to develop creative apps for its platform.

About 10,000 students are invited to 50 engineering and technology institutes across the country on February 26 to come up with ideas and translate them into apps.

The colleges are currently holding training sessions for students who wish to brush up their coding skills as they register, Pratima Amonkar, Director Strategic Audience Marketing of Microsoft, said here in a statement. On its part, Microsoft will provide the competing students with free software such as Visual Studio Express for Windows 8 and free Windows Store registration codes.

The AppFest would see the young developers code their dream applications under the supervision of Microsoft mentors, trainers and Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs), and submit the apps online.

These apps, after validation, will be put on the Windows Store (the online app bank for Windows smart gadget users). The focus will be on consumer applications, covering education, games and apps for social good.
