Vodafone Mobile Application Store opens in India

Vodafone India recently introduced a mobile application store for handsets on its network operating across various mobile platforms like Android, BlackBerry, Java and Symbian. The idea was formulated and developed in partnership with Appia.

The app store is set to entertain users with over 10,000 applications, spanning through various categories like games, entertainment, social networking, local culture and more. The collection boasts of content input from several local contributors including Hungama, Spice, India Games and Nazara. In addition to this, Vodafone-branded apps like Portfolio Tracker, Vodafone TV and Chhota Comics will also be made available.

“Appia is honored to partner with Vodafone India to launch an Application Store with a great collection of mobile applications to Vodafone’s more than 145 million subscribers across India,” conveyed Jud Bowman, CEO of Appia. “Vodafone has always been a leader in mobile data services, and as one of the fastest growing and most progressive operators in the world, Vodafone continues to set the standard for the mobile application experience in India.”

Appia is now set to manage the content for this storefront, as well as the end-to-end managed service platform for merchandising and commerce. Both companies have activated the Appia Developer Program to encourage content submissions from local developers for this store. Further on, the two parties have also encouraged developers who aspire to contribute to this venture to visit dev.appia.com.

Existing consumers of the network carrier who fulfill the need of a GPRS enabled handset, can gain access to the Vodafone Mobile Application Store by texting or to 111. They will receive a link in response which will take them directly to the app store. Also, users can login to live.vodafone.in and click the Vstore link on the Vodafone Live homepage.
